The scene with the rats on fire was real.

FYI The scene with the cat is not real according to IMDb trivia, “Tun-Fei Mou covered the cat with red-dyed honey … [the cat] was cleaned up, rewarded with fish and sent back to his owner.”
However, also according to IMDb trivia, this statement made by the director has been disputed by crew members who worked on the film, saying he actually killed the cat and made up the story to avoid controversy.

Large number of rats are kept in an enclosure where they don’t have enough space.
3 boys attempting to hide from their superior run into the rat enclosure and out of fear step on a bunch of rats.
A bird has its feet taped to a handlebar as part of a toxic gas exposure experiment along with a woman and her child.
A cat is thrown into the rat enclosure and is overcome and bitten to death with lots of (fake) blood.
The rats are set on fire and are filmed running and squealing.
