In the first episode a child is taken by druglords and threatened because his mother angered them. Throughout the series it shows flashbacks of one of the main characters mother. She was very physically abusive. Not a ton is shown as far as physical abuse, but there are several mentions of broken bones and black eyes. In the final episode of season one, two kids are kidnapped and held hostage.

There are a couple episodes that revolve around a murder of a transgender woman. Light jokes are made about her gender but the two cops are very understanding and eager to learn and be respectful about her pronouns. The other two are very knowledgeable and set them in their place. Very cute and wholesome in my opinion.

It is assumed to be a hate crime at first but we learn more later on that it wasn't a hate crime at all. Her murder had nothing to do with someone who hates transgender people. Trying my hardest not to spoil too much. She has her breasts mutilated and it is shown in some detail.
