Still reeling from the tragic death of their mother, a teenage girl and her younger sister find themselves plagued by a sadistic presence in their house and struggle to get their grieving father to pay attention before it’s too late.
This movie contains 44 potentially triggering events.
Not direct abuse but could be triggering. The child expresses that something is happening to her and is told by her dad and sister that it is just her imagination. The child is also terrorised/beat up and injured by the monster itself.
A patient comes to see the therapist at his house and hangs himself in a bathroom behind the door. The hanging itself is not shown but you clearly get to see the body hung there and then it is mentioned afterwards. They also return to the scene later when the body is no longer there.
I wouldn't say damaged per se, but a kid has a loose tooth that does come out in a startling way. If you have a tooth trigger, head for the bathroom when they tie a string to the loose tooth & again when they smoke weed.
Right at the beginning, off screen but still a shocker (the audience I saw it with was audibly upset). If you walk in 5 minutes late or so, you can skip it. And it's very skippable, you will easily understand how this monster works without having to watch that part.
SPOILER
After having tried unsuccesfully to contact her mom's ghost a couple times throughout the movie, the mom's lighter responds in the way previously asked near the end of the movie, after behaving unrealistically, implying it's her ghost. No visuals.
When Sadie is in the basment, there is a view through multiple scrolls of paper at some point. The monster can be seen moving behind the scrolls. The scrolls COULD be seen as multiple holes so I thought I'd mention it.
POSSIBLE SPOILERS: 1. After waking from a nightmare, lead character coughs intensely. No v* but sounds could be triggering
2. During a sleepover when the girls are smoking, the lead character starts coughing intensely. She runs to the bathroom and coughs up something over the toilet. I didn’t watch to see for sure if any v* was shown, but the audio was quite triggering to me in a similar was to the electrode scene from “The Ring” if you’ve seen that. Once the other girls rush in, you should be fine
There is a hospital scene but jic for those who don't like them: It is a brief scene and nothing bad happens there. The dad and the eldest daughter talk/argue but nothing bad happens. No monsters are allowed in the hospital!
One of the main characters is a therapist and treats people with mental illness on screen
The main family just went through a loss and are all in family therapy together so yes there is definitely mental illness
There is a scene with a flashing red cube, Christmas lights flash from red to green for a good amount of time also. Flashes are on th slower side, no strobes.
A main character is called psychotic, crazy, and schizophrenic as insults by a group of teenage girls, who also say they don’t like her in the same conversation. Another minor character is reduced to “that crazy guy” by the same teenagers due to his assumed psychotic mental illness.
No sex at all in this film but jic if you don't like any implications at all: There is a scene where the main girl takes her first hit of weed and a mean girl says something akin to asking her if they were popping her cherry.
The monster is shot repeatedly during the scene where Mrs. Billings tries to trap and kill it. No humans are shot at any time, but Sadie is tied up very close to the line of fire.
