A group of teen girls from different backgrounds must fight for survival after a plane crash strands them on a deserted island. The castaways both clash and bond as they learn more about each other, the secrets they keep, and the traumas they've all endured. But there’s just one twist… these girls did not end up on this island by accident.
This tv show contains 79 potentially triggering events.
Maybe? A side character is introduced in a quirky autistic coded sort of way. Seemed a bit over the top but overall he seems framed as someone to relate to and root for rather than laugh at.
Season 2 specifically, shelby is implied to have some form of 'split personality' by the detectives, but it would not be accurate DID representation if that is what is intended
There is some deception happening with one or two of the characters and they explicitly try to make the character think that they didn't see what they thought they saw. It's not extensive but it's there.
There is specific discussion around one character and their experiences with an adult who abused children, and may have also abused them. More broadly one could argue that the entire premise of the show revolves around psychological (and circumstantially physical) abuse of children/teens. Also there is a lot of discussion/a lot shown generally around the various traumas the main characters have experienced.
I wouldn't say it's supposed to be abuse but there's a very graphic scene where a bunny is found to have chewed half it's body out of a trap and the top half of it is found near a tree with babies nursing from it. Martha freaks out, there's a dramatic chase scene, and ultimately she goes back and kills the babies to prevent them from starving. It does have a point in the story, and you don't see the act but the bunny bodies are shown on screen for a minute or so. I found the imagery fairly distressing, just wanted to add this in here.
It’s revealed that the teens are all drugged on the plane before the “crash” in both seasons. A character in season 1 describes being roofied at a party in high school
When Leah and Rachel are exploring the plane wreckage, Leah is grabbed by the ankle and held underwater by Rachel. In season 2, a character is tackled on the beach during a fight and is held under water
it's never shown on screen but there are implications that a character has been raped/sexually assaulted in her childhood by a doctor that was helping her recover from a leg injury. the episode explores her trauma, including denial, about that event in her life.
A character is taking care of her father in a flashback. He has a hole in his throat with a medical device in it. She removes this to clean his throat. It's not a closeup necessarily, but the camera lingers.
One character isn't breathing and has to be resuscitated, and at other points very ill characters are struggling to stay conscious/keep breathing/keep going.
SPOILER episode 2x01: a body is found on the beach mauled by an unknown animal, with the skull/face hollowed out. this is graphic and the camera lingers close up for a second
Not specifically, though one could assert that the whole premise of what the characters are going through is psychological torture, and tangentially physically.
I mean not explicitly. A character dies who we think is a teen but turns out to be a young adult later on. And there are a couple of things mentioned/phrased in a certain way that imply another teen dies. And a couple of friends/lovers of other characters that die off screen.
The whole premise of the show is that the girls are put on the island without their consent, though they do not know they’ve technically been kidnapped.
A male mannequin torso washes up on the island. The first scene with him may be alarming because he looks a bit like a body. The women call him Marcus and treat him like a member of their group. He is often comic relief and is not intended to be scary.
episode 6 - several vomit scenes, they eat something bad and have food poisoning. Most of the characters vomit at some point, sometimes at the same time or in the same scene.
episode 2: Rachel vomits.
episode 1: Rachel vomits twice.
I don’t know if it is shown but a character admits to harming in one episode, also one character has bulimia which could be considered self harm
Season 2: Martha hits herself in the head with a rock
Leah's paranoia is featured throughout the show and she clashes with several characters, mostly nonviolently though not always. In S1E4 she shoves Fatin who trips and injures herself on a large piece of driftwood. She also attempts to fight off people who attempt to restrain her several times
A side character who could be autistic gets killed. It's not shown on screen, and there's no ableist language, but his death could have been related to it.
(SPOILERS) No, however in episode 9 one character runs into the ocean in a way that suggests attempted suicide. She doesn’t die though. The same character also makes some vaguely suicidal jokes/comments throughout the show, and though the words aren’t EXACTLY “I’ll kill myself” they can be triggering.
Martha suffered from PTSD, Linh suffers from flashbacks of a traumatic event, and a lot of the show is also interviews with the teens after the island which may insinuate PTSD
There's cursing (fuck, shit, cunt, etc) throughout the show though I would say it's frequency is moderate and consistent with the severity of the narrative. there are a few cropped sex scenes (no nudity), an instance of sexting (mild nudity) and a scene in which a character jokingly mimics eating pussy with mussles
In ep 01x04 Leah walks naked into the ocean. The only thing shown is her mid-back and up. In ep 02x02 Kirin stands naked for a while. Full rear nudity there.
A lesbian couple is harassed in a parking lot. There’s also a male mannequin that is given a name and serves as a sort of sex icon for the girls, but is clearly meant to be lighthearted and comedic
