A death machine is tested on animals and when a wild dog dies after screaming so loudly that the whole village can hear, the machine is considered ready for human use. The scream is the only reference to the dog's death; no other description is given.
No graphic violence or death but the female main character goes through a lot. Also, not sure where else to put this but there is some subtle misogyny from the villains.
The narrator/ author insert is an emotionally absent father, not exactly abusive but not really there for his son. None of this is important to the main story.
The main character tries to escape by swimming away in shark infested waters, another character throws blood in the water to make the sharks attack her but she is saved last minute
One of Buttercup's captors hits her. He also draws blood when holding a knife to her throat.
The Prince rips Buttercup's hair and drags her to her room and throws her in.
It's described a lot in backstory. Worthy of note: someone took advantage of someone else's alcohol addiction to manipulate them into basically joining their team, this character is overall very manipulative and uses this person's past to insult them a few times.
There are many references to the Prince's hunting zoo under the castle. He hunts and kills all sizes of animals.
Westley has to kill Rodents Of Unusual Size, basically huge rats.
Inigo uses his sword to kill bats.
Not in the main story, but in the first section, narrated by the author's character, he seriously considers cheating on his wife, and only doesent because he blows his chance
Said as a joke in the opening section narrated by the author. The author jokingly tells his wife to tell their son that if he (the son) doesent like the book, "I'll kill myself"
The conceit of this book is that Goldman is telling you about how he has written the abridged (or "good parts") version of an original book by S. Morgenstern. Goldman addresses the reader constantly, sometimes interrupting the story to do so. He even offers to mail you a copy of his own version of the "reunion scene" (you can look this up on the Internet--nobody ever got the reunion scene).
The main character is forced to marry a man who is probably much older than her due to his parents ages, but this does not end up happening. It's mentioned that a woman is significantly younger than her husband but both are adults and she is a very minor character.
Buttercup tries swimming away from her captors and one of them says he is cutting himself and throwing blood into the water so sharks will come. It's dark so she can't see if he really does it.
There's swordfighting where blood is drawn.
