The sheriff sexually assaults Sophie as an attempt to bait Grover Ohta to come out of hiding in her house. It's brief, as Ohta was never there in the first place and the sheriff let's her go shortly after, regardless it is a jarring scene (about 1:08:20 to 1:9:20)

Various flashbacks reveal Sophie in her youth was beat with a stick as a punishment for playing with another child of a different race.

Sophie and Grover Ohta are depicted having sex twice — once with Sophie and Grover stripping and kissing together (at most shown is both shirtless) before the scene changes (about 1:16:05 to 1:18:05) and another with them groping, kissing, and during (blurred) intercourse, with the scenes shot intimately but obscured of details (about 1:20:00 to 1:21:30)

More bittersweet than sad — Ann lives contently and friends with Salome, but no longer has Grover Ohta and Sophie to her company. Salome herself will never see her childhood friend back, but she is alive and happy as well.
Grover and Sophie escape unhurt and together, but, being that the former is a Japanese-American and it's shortly after Pearl Harbor, both are revealed to be living in a Japanese Internment Camp. Grover is able to grow plants (maybe apples, per his dreams) and Sophie is happy with him regardless of the circumstances, but are incarcerated nonetheless.

Ann, a larger woman, says a self-deprecating joke when she's bedridden due to a broken ankle, and says she'll become "a bigger lump of lard" after her friend promises her plently of potato salad. She also jokes to her friends as planning to "fatten me up for the slaughter", akin to a pig for a feast. Both are light-hearted in nature.

Also, during a news reel at the theater, the reel shows Japanese prisoners on their knees, hands bound, being executed with guns. It is shown on screen.
