It's implied throughout that Pam had lost a couple of daughters somehow, then in a tragic flashback it shows the night she finds her 2 young daughters (5 & 6yo) dead in their beds due to a gas leak. If you wish to skip this scene it occurs the night she returns from her ordeal after she falls asleep on the kitchen floor (post gorging on pizza & beer)

Bit of a spoiler; but John had gone up the trail fully intending to die after losing a loved one up there the previous year. Even after Pam had found him & battled to get him part way back down he runs to a rocky outcrop & throws himself off - seemingly to his death - only for Pam to find him a few metres down in the snow with an injured ankle
