Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery

Movie • 2025 • Mystery

Report

DDD Official Review

"Wake Up Dead Man" is a solid who-done-it told somewhat out of order. I personally wasn't bothered by Daniel Craig's accent as ridiculous as it is. The mystery itself is intriguing. As you watch, you will want to step into Benoit Blanc's shoes and solve it yourself.A girl get's slapped (the scene is shown twice), at least on person is killed (duh), but the only thing that really stands out is one scene involving bodies dissolving in acid.

Synopsis

When young priest Jud Duplenticy is sent to assist charismatic firebrand Monsignor Jefferson Wicks, it’s clear that all is not well in the pews. After a sudden and seemingly impossible murder rocks the town, the lack of an obvious suspect prompts local police chief Geraldine Scott to join forces with renowned detective Benoit Blanc to unravel a mystery that defies all logic.

A grown woman throws herself at a young Girl and beats her.
That is the closest thing to brutalisation of a woman in this movie.

There is no active gaslighting of one character by another, but the killer's actions make another character doubt their perception of reality to the point where they falsely believe to have killed someone.

It is not clear if the killer is even aware of this. It is certainly not intentional.

One of the characters takes a lot of alcohol to cope. It is not shown a lot on screen but it is relevant to that character’s storyline.

Someone intentionally takes a lethal dose of a sedative. They are explicitely NOT an addict. So overdose might be the wrong term here.

Two people are being killed with a drug, both weren't aware of consuming the drug. Overdose might be the wrong term here as well.

The cop in this movie is mostly portrayed in a neutral manner and her main concern is to do her job. No utmost heroic actions come from her.

There's a scene of someone destroying the inside of a church, including old looking statues and the cross hanging at the front, but nobody is like "oh no, my favorite statue!" or anything.

It's a mystery movie; you have to reconsider what you know constantly. There's lots of plots and deceptions, pretty on par with the other two films'.
A character has cultlike control over other people, who shape their reality around theirs.

No. The instance discussed in the comments is not dissociation - the character was physically knocked unconscious and wakes up beside what he believes is evidence he killed someone, but it's obvious to the audience that nothing happened and he finds out fairly quickly. No actual dissociation or lost time is experienced.

Very strong flashing from 1:34:00 to about 1:35:35. The priest slips in mud, runs into the forest and a fist knocks him out. The flashing starts immediately after you see the fist and is over when the dialogue starts up again.

There is a disabled character who is manipulated multiple times into searching for a "cure" or "fix". Someone thinks a miracle has happened when they stand up from their wheelchair, but they're just an ambulatory user. The misunderstanding is played off as a quick laugh point (at the misunderstander, not the disabled person)

A flashback character is called the "harlot whore" who slept around and wears scanty clothing, but that's it. The camera doesn't sexualize her, nor does anyone else

A major side character gave up their musical instrument due to a chronic illness. She is in a wheelchair and her illness (or her hope to get healed) is her main motivator.

A character is told they are being thrown out of the house. He's an adult, a bad person and we don't see this happening, nor it seems like a problem to the character
