A pre-med student and her friends encounter the death of a patient that exhibited symptoms of rabies. They are soon faced with an even bigger problem as their patient comes back from the dead and infects the people on campus, causing a lockdown and trapping the students inside.

It has both a happy-ish and sad ending. Overall, it's kind of sad, but a few characters survive that makes it somewhat better. Also, shows some new people formed into groups of survivors, and seems like the filmmakers might have left it as possible to create a sequel.

I'm not sure if this qualifies, since it's not intentional. The mother turns into a zombie, and the child is then alone (no other parent or relatives). Other adults then immediately take the child into their care.
