there are comments and a lot of chava's own thoughts that she is similar to a man in a dress. these aren't played for laughs, and are meant to show how uncomfortable she is acting as a human woman.

The jinni, who is hundreds of years old, has sex with a 15 year old girl and an 18 year old girl. The author portrays the girls as consenting. The jinni unintentionally harms both girls, killing one (forced to do so against his will). The jinni also terrifies a little boy with the suggestion that his mother’s soul will haunt him.

opium is used in a notable scene by the antagonist. alcohol and cigarettes are regularly abused by one of the protagonists, but they have no effect on him

A sheep has its head bashed in with a rock. It is a short but very graphic scene. Later, several jackals are evidently killed, and the book mentions their pack jumping over their charred bodies. There isn’t much animal death, but what little there is is pretty graphic and hard to read. There might be more I'm not remembering.

Sewing needles are applied to the body, but the body isn’t made of flesh and isn’t harmed the way a regular body would be.

there is a not-intense scene where our protagonist repeatedly stabs herself, with increased intensity, and contemplates even more severe mutiliation. this does not harm her at all, and is done out of idle curiosity.
the antagonist describes carving his arm with a knife, though it is not done as self harm
