No death occurs. A pocket monster, which most often resembles an animal inspired by one or more from the real world, can be incapitated from being able to battle due to fainting (no health points left for battling), it is still very much alive. All it needs is healing via items, or through a fast health-restoring machine at a pokemon center, which are pokemon hospitals commonly found throughout the game.
