Bubble the goldfish is mentioned to have been kept in a fish bowl at home, which is appalling conditions for any kind of fish - later it is kept in a bag and in unfiltered water in the bath until it dies. This is not out of any sort of malice, just the family being ill-informed about the proper care of goldfish.

Jay is physically and verbally abusive towards Lola Rose. Victoria is also verbally abusive to Lola Rose at times and hits her twice. She also leaves the kids (10-11 and 5 years old) alone in the flat without a proper babysitter, which counts as negligence, despite the fact that she does love them.

Victoria/Nikki consumes excess alcohol during stressful times such as when Jake wants her to go to the doctor about a lump in her breast, and the night before her hospital stay.

Victoria/Nikki is mentioned to have cheated on Jay with a footballer before the start of the story, and her being with Jake is considered cheating by Jay, despite the fact that Nikki had left him.

Not destroyed, but worth mentioning - partway into the story, Kendall loses his toy shark which renders him inconsolable. The toy is quickly replaced, but it may still be upsetting to those who are sensitive to the thought of losing a beloved toy.

Victoria makes jokes about her sister Barbara, who is overweight. Also in a non-joking way, a lot of attention is brought to Barbara's weight both in the narration and the dialogue.

Never explicitly stated, but Victoria/Nikki is stated to have said some horrible things to Steve and Andy, the neighbours upstairs, for being 'too friendly' to her boyfriend Jake. Given that Steve and Andy are implied to be a gay couple and were 'mortally offended' at Victoria's words, it can be assumed that she said some manner of homophobic slur, though no such words are written out.

It's a hopeful ending. Lola Rose and her family are going to live with Auntie Barbara in her pub which gives them a stable home and protection from Jay. However, Lola Rose has to leave her friend Harpreet behind, and there's always a chance of Victoria's cancer returning. The book ends by saying 'fingers crossed' to reflect the hopeful uncertainty of their future.
