Honestly I'd agree on this. Throughout his childhood, Punpun wasn't doing good, at all. Getting threatened to be killed by his crush, gets assaulted by his aunt and then blamed for that, divorced parents at a very young age.. etc
By the end of the book series, we do see him become worse by abusing Aiko, killing her mom and stealing their car/running away with Aiko. Aiko didn't seem to care about the abuse, as she was glad she got to be with her love, but as I can remember, Punpun was also calling her mean things and at one point, even attempted to rape her.
