In the first instance (about 26 minutes into the episode) Joseph Smith hears someone yelling for help and runs to find that a group of men have a dog hung by the neck and you can hear the dog whining. I had to mute the show at this point but a few minutes later, the dog is shot and killed. You see it from a distance.
In the second instance (about 53 minutes in) Allen describes a story about his father beating a dog to death with a baseball bat. You see a flashback of the father with the bat but they do not show the dog. I had the show muted so I’m not sure if you can hear the dog cry.
Not necessarily a slur but definition racism: in episode 3, a Lafferty wife is arrested and in one of her answers to Detective Taba's question of "when are the end of days going to be here?" (not verbatim) she makes inference to the fact that Taba is an American Indian and he will be one of the first to go so he'd better "make his way to a baptismal font quickly" - assuming she's meaning he needs to attone for the "sin" of being a POC.
It doesn't show it, but it's mentioned in the show that was what was done to the 15 month old baby who was murdered. However, according to Wikipedia, IRL she was almost decapitated, but not all the way.
In Episode 2, 52:50-54:00, one of the characters tells a story of when a dog was beaten to death. The dog isn't shown but there are clips with sound of the person hitting a bat down towards the camera.
Not sure if it qualifies as assault but in episode 2 a man locks the door and closes the curtains and isolates his woman student and touches her unnecessarily on her hands and asks her to smile. While not "completed" all of the red flags are there.
Yes, though of an animal and not a person, in episode two. If you want to avoid it, skip the scene with Joseph Smith and his wife walking arm-and-arm in a settlement.
There is a scene, at the end of episode two, in which Joseph Smith is dragged outside, stripped of his shirt, and threatened with having body parts cut off. While it doesn't happen, the scene is intense and could be triggering.
At 58 minutes into episode 3 the character Robin grabs what looks like a penknife / switchblade and attempts what looks like SH. Unsure if he was trying to SH or commit, but the scene can certainly triggering.
The scene lasts from 58:10 through to 58:35
Around 18 minutes into episode three, there's some shaky cams. It happens right as Pyre is discussing how Mormons were sent to be killed. Doesn't last for too long, and the shaky cam isn't that intense, but it's certainly shaky
At the beginning of episode 4, Pyre's mother says that if Jews do not accept Christ, they will go to Hell with Hitler. She is clearly suffering from dementia and does not speak from a true place of hatred, but the verbiage can be triggering nonetheless.
A Native American character is called "chief" and frequently made fun of in passing remarks. Episode 4 around the 14 minute mark a character says "g*psy."
Around the 43 minute mark of episode 3, Pyre's wife makes sexual reference to his penis. The two then begin to kiss on the bed and she unzips his pants, but the scene cuts before anything further is shown.
