Anne keeps a secret diary, they read a salacious novel, they get a classmate in trouble, they spy on the nuns, they set aside their communion wafers; they make a pact of devotion.

Anne pets a kitten hard enough that it cries, then shoves it off her lap. Later she roughly shoves the kitten off her lap again and it cries. A bird is fed a poisoned seed and dies on screen. I'm pretty sure it was a real bird. It thrashes and flutters around and lies panting in a contorted position before dying. It very clearly suffered. Later Anne holds a bird and either squeezes it to death or breaks its neck. Again, it's clearly a real bird being killed.
