ReportSynopsis
A 30-something novelist named Rama attends the trial of Laurence Coly at the Saint-Omer Criminal Court. The latter is accused of killing her fifteen-month-old daughter by abandoning her on a beach in the north of France just as the tide was rising. Rama would like to use this story to write a modern-day adaptation of the ancient myth of Medea, but things don’t go as planned during the trial. Ultimately, it will be Rama’s relationship with motherhood which is called into question during this “huis clos” trial.

Basically the defense for the crime committed (which is never shown) is that she was under the influence of sorcery. It's not exactly equated with mental illness, and she doesn't display any signs of mental illness in the movie.

Not extreme. but what stood out to me from the movie was when the investigating police officer(?) was testifying and indicated that because Laurence is West African, she might believe in sorcery compelling her. In that same conversation, the prosecuting attorney says "Female genital mutilation has cultural value."
