David, a robotic boy—the first of his kind programmed to love—is adopted as a test case by a Cybertronics employee and his wife. Though he gradually becomes their child, a series of unexpected circumstances make this life impossible for David. Without final acceptance by humans or machines, David embarks on a journey to discover where he truly belongs, uncovering a world in which the line between robot and machine is both vast and profoundly thin.

The film focuses on the intensity in which the protagonist loves his mother. The protagonist’s father forcefully separates the protagonist from the mother. This is traumatic. The second half of the film focuses on the protagonist trying to return to his mother. The mother dies during this time.
SPOILERS In the last scenes he is granted a final wish- which he uses to spend one final day with his mother.
She had died long ago- but he has a lock of her hair in a locket- which the aliens use to resurrect her, although her form can only exist 24hours due to their technology.
After they spend the day together, they both pass away.
There is are several scenes where David is afraid and repeats “Keep me safe. Keep me safe.” In addition there’s one scene where he is abandoned and cries almost hysterically.
