Starve Acre

Movie • 2024

Report
Set in their family estate, Starve Acre, in rural 1970s England, Richard and Juliette find their idyllic family life disrupted when their son Ewan starts acting strangely. The formerly happy couple grow farther apart when Richard buries himself in local folklore -— including the myth that an ancient oak tree set on their estate possesses phenomenal powers — while Juliette seeks comfort in their local community. Just when it seems the couple may reconnect, dark and sinister forces find their way into the family home and their attention is diverted by an unexpected discovery.

So the adorable Pekingese is alive at the end and no harm comes to him throughout, however I do fear for his continued safety.

Although the abuse is not shown on screen, Richard discusses being neglected and abused by his father (and it is mentioned briefly by other characters).

A woman is killed, but it doesn’t seem as though for spectacle, and a man is killed as well shortly before this.

There is gore, but I wouldn’t describe the amount as excessive.

If it’s possible for a rabbit/hare to be de-harmed, this film is an example of it.

A horse is injured at the start of the film, and possibly died as a result of it (the horse’s exact fate is left unknown).

A pony’s eye is gouged out by a kid. It happens pretty much right at the beginning of the film with no warning.

I’m getting tired of the animal cruelty fetish these indie horror directors seem to have

There's a rabbit that is very, very dead in the first half of the film. It doesn't stay that way.

A character is seen bleeding, a horse is shown having lost an eye, and a rabbit is shown in various stages of reverse-decomposition
