At the height of the Vietnam war, Captain Benjamin Willard is sent on a dangerous mission that, officially, "does not exist, nor will it ever exist." His goal is to locate - and eliminate - a mysterious Green Beret Colonel named Walter Kurtz, who has been leading his personal army on illegal guerrilla missions into enemy territory.

There are many amputated heads shown and the colonel says the reason that he is insane is because he saw children getting vaccinated by soldiers for polio but because those kids where in an indigenous tribe the parents cut all of their arms off thinking the soldiers did something bad to them, the colonel saw the pile of little arms. While it’s not specifically stated, you can see the mental deterioration of soldiers and them doing things which many people would consider war crimes or inhumane. It’s a pretty good take on what war can do on the human physique.
