In a flashback, a child is told by his father that he has to win against a certain player or he's not allowed back home. The threatened action does not actually happen. In the English dub, the father sounds a bit tipsy.

Two scenes during the pilot: First is a dramatization of the real historical figure Honinbo Shusaku dying from cholera. Very briefly, you see him lean over and a lethal amount of blood pours onto the table. You do not see it coming out of his mouth, and you do not hear any bodily or liquidy noises. The scene is less than 1 second long. The second time is when someone feels the immense sadness of someone else, and this upsets their stomach while causing them to hold their own mouth closed and run away. The next scene shows the character panting in front of a running sink. No imagery or sounds of the act are shown.

In the beginning of the show, a ghost explains their past life, which ended in a suicide. The ghost says he threw himself into a river, and you see a flashback of him walking into a river. You do not see the suicide.

The anime ending is a bit bittersweet. The manga's ending is sadder. Not tragic, but it is a sad end.

There is a go board that has bloodstains on it which shows up during the pilot and once when the main character visits his grandfather. During the pilot episode, you see a dramatization of the real historical figure Honinbo Shusaku losing a lethal amount of blood from his mouth and dying from cholera. The scene with the blood flowing is less than 1 second long.

Not necessarily fat jokes, but there is a big character later on who can be very eccentric, and people seem just a little uncomfortable around him. I don't think it's because of his weight, though.

Some insults are thrown on rare occurrences. Pretty mild things such as, "are you a slow kind of player?" The dub is otherwise fine. I don't know enough about the unofficial fansubs to say the same, though.

They play a game throughout the show that involves placing hard, slick stones onto wooden boards. The sound the stone makes is a distinct tap/click on the board. This sound is present in virtually every episode. If this particular sound bothers you, I recommend reading the book instead.

Not quite a toy, but a book that is a prize at a carnival. A character tears up a prize at a children's festival and crushes it into the ground. The characters get angry with him and yell at him.

In episode 14, a character struggles to catch his breath because he is too anxious for the game he is about to start. His hands are shaking. He takes a moment to gain his composure, breathing deep breaths, and he is fine. There is no gasping. Instead, it plays out as a "forgetting to breathe" moment.

Two. In the pilot, a character faints and is in an ambulance. You hear the sirens and see him resting on a bed while his friend talks to the first responder. No equipment is shown. Later, someone is sent to the hospital for heart problems. He is in his own room and you don't see much in terms of medical supplies, but he stays there for the rest of the series. A nurse will enter the room on occasion.

There is at least one time this happens. In the pilot we are shown an animated dramatization of the real person, Honinbo Shusaku, spitting out a lethal amount of blood and dying from cholera. The mouth is not shown, but rather the table he is sitting in front of as the blood flows. It is less than 1 second long.

Not in the show but in the manga, a photo of a real person who looks a bit like a clown is shown in one of the author's notes, which are present in between chapters. I forget which book he appears in, though, but it is just a photo of his face in costume while he is smiling.

In the pilot, a ghost mentions drowning himself to death in a river during his past life. During a flashback, you see him in the distance walk into the river up to about his sternum. You do not see him get any deeper, but you hear some small splashing sounds as the camera cuts to something else for about four seconds. The scene ends as he talks about something else.

None happen onscreen, but the bombing of Hiroshima during WWII is mentioned when the main character visits a museum there. It is as brief as the curators saying that they were happy the artifacts from the 19th century survived the bombing so that they may be preserved today.
