He's not supposed to be a fancy rat, he's supposed to be a wild rat, but fancy rats are easy to train so he was used. He's very cute, very chubby, and he's got big boggly eyes, which made him very sympathetic. It was upsetting to see him die, but the puppet of his dead body is not realistic.
He is reanimated and survives thereafter, sharing a body with another rat. During the credit scene he gets into a fight with a severed penis.
