Two different ways. On one hand there's magical realism where the universe behaves in a melodramatic coming of age metaphor sort of way...And at the same time the protagonist gets gaslighted (see that entry for more info) to ignore shady behavior so altogether it kind of messes with your head because the shady behavior starts to look like just another fanciful magical realism metaphor.
