Irene and Franklin York, a retired couple, have a secret: a Chamber buried in their backyard that miraculously leads to a strange, deserted planet. When an enigmatic young man arrives, the Yorks quiet existence is upended and the mysterious Chamber they thought they knew so well turns out to be much more than they could have ever imagined.
No, but season 1 ends in a cliffhanger to a large extent. Several big story threads remain unresolved at the end of season 1. I put this comment here because there is no question about cliffhangers.
In Episode 1, about 25 minutes in, a nursing home staff member pushes Irene’s wheelchair without her permission. Another staff member intervenes and asks permission before touching her chair. That staff member then says dismissive, demeaning things about the nursing home residents. It’s an ongoing theme for that character. In Episode 3, they steal personal belongings from nursing home residents, which comes up again later in the series.
This season revolves heavily around people looking for their fathers or the fact that they are missing. It's unclear if Jude's father left on purpose. Denise's father committed suicide when she was 5, which strains her relationship with her grandma.
Not direct hate speech but there are a couple instances where Denise deals with insidious casual racism from the people around her (like being accused of only getting into business school because she’s Black)
No, but in episode 6 a police officer shows background-check documents that indicate “violent incidents and psychiatric holds”. The officer says the character is “not well” and wants to take that character into custody.
The first couple of episodes have several instances of people with dementia, including a visit with a woman who has limited short term memory. It also deals heavily in growing older and the fear of developing dementia.
No, but in the first scene of episode 2 a character makes a veiled threat to a woman about kidnapping her teenager daughter. In later episodes the teen is in situations against her will.
At 7:48, a male character get sick into a bowl after riding some sort of elevator. No visual, his face is in the bowl. only a couple gagging sounds and one faint liquid sound.
Suicide is a major theme in this series. At the end of episode 1 Irene writes and narrates a long suicide note, but is interrupted before she can follow through. The letter comes up again in episode 6. In Episode 2, Denise reveals that her dad committed suicide 20 years ago. Episode 7 spends a lot of screentime dealing with that past suicide of a family member, including painful flashbacks of the days leading up to and including the suicide.
