Volcanologist Harry Dalton comes to the sleepy town of Dante's Peak to investigate the recent rumblings of the dormant volcano the burg is named for. Before long, his worst fears are realized when a massive eruption hits, and immediately, Harry, the mayor and the townspeople find themselves fighting for their lives amid a catastrophic nightmare.

There's a discussion about how a husband/father abandoned his wife and children and how difficult it was for them. The wife and children are main characters in the movie.
An elderly character dies after climbing out of a boat into acidic lake water in order to pull the disintegrating boat, with other characters in it, to shore.
There is a quick shot of a little girl on a porch holding a kitten and crying as the volcano starts to erupt. It is assumed that she and the cat make it to safety but they don’t show it.
Grandma jumps into acid lake to save her family and she is burned heavily by the acid and then dies. Scene is very emotional and the children are crying. The scene begins at 1:11:35.
One of the characters does joke about her coworker's mental illness, however it reads more as a joke between close friends the line is "[the doctors] say I can leave when my heads fine" "okay see you in 10 years!"
