Sam's father beat him when he was a kid. Adult Sam decides the best way to deal with his trauma is to kill his dad. He draws inspiration from real-life serial killer Ed Kemper, who killed his abusive mother. An interview of Kemper is shown where he discusses murdering his mom, so there's that, too.

I wouldn’t call it excessive but Alan does fantasise about stabbing Sam a few times and there is a fair amount of blood spray. In episode 7 I think, the fantasies escalate to include Sam getting shot in the head by the police. It happens very suddenly with not much warning and is pretty graphic.
