while in his mother's house, the protagonist moves a puppy roughly on a bed, and then slaps it. the dog seems startled rather than hurt, and continues moving around the bed.
the pet dog killed after the car chase. the scene is from 1:34:25, when the dog jumps out of the car and struggles with the attackers, to 1:34:55, when the shots have been fired and the barking stops. only some brief struggling in the background is seen.
part of the protagonist's backstory, as told by him during confession around the half-hour mark, is that when he was 13 he was taken to an adult stranger's house for sex. some of what happened to him is shown - kissing and fully clothed touching. in addition, his wife later tells him on the train how from the ages of 15 to 21 she was raped by a family friend she's still close to and used to call 'uncle'. none of this is shown to the viewer but she describes it during an intimate scene with her husband.
aside from the sexual violence described under the child abuse section listed above, when the protagonist first goes to kiss his professor's wife, she says no, though she then consents to their affair.
