I feel like the other comment might be about a different movie? Either that or it’s a movie the characters were watching within the movie that I forgot about. I don’t remember any dogs (or giants) in the film
No. A woman’s partner tries to convince her to believe something she finds implausible, which she finds somewhat distressing, but it’s not for the purposes of gaslighting; the man genuinely believes it
No but there is a description of one being taken away. The adult main character remembers finding a hidden Christmas present (a Barbie) and how her parents didn’t give it to her and stopped giving her any presents in future years, making her hate Christmas
Yes, it’s complicated, but I think it could be a major Santa spoiler. Details: All the adults in the movie except for one take it as obvious that Santa does not exist. *There is explicit discussion and portrayal of Santa activity from the parent’s perspective, including Christmas Eve night.* There is a scene where an eight year old girl says someone at school said Santa isn’t real, and she asks her grown-ups if it’s true. The man who believes in Santa convinces her that it isn’t, but there is a lot of discussion of how she is at the age where where many people stop believing. The end of the movie leaves Santa slightly ambiguous. The child announces that a wish she whispered to mall Santa did come true, so that’s proof enough for her. And then she receives a present under the tree that her mother did not want her to have. The last line of the movie is the mother incredulously saying her boyfriend’s name, wondering if he is the one who bought the present. Then the movie ends, so you don’t know whether the present is from him or from Santa. TL;DR technically this movie does not take a definitive stance on Santa, but there is so much discussion of Christmas logistics and most adults ‘knowing’ he isn’t real that I would NOT RECOMMEND it for family movie night
Not clinically, but the main character hates Christmas because of bad associations with it from her past. She describes her parents being cruel about it when she was a child. No PTSD-specific symptoms like visual flashbacks or nightmares occur
Nothing overtly abusive onscreen. The adult main character does describe her parents being cruel to her regarding Christmas in the past. She found a Christmas present so her parents didn’t give it to her and stopped giving her any in future years, making her hate Christmas
