There is no mention of abuse per se, but one character spends their child separated from family and moving homes a lot because the parent doesn’t want them home after their sibling died.
Chapter 18: Louise lies to Mark about letting Pupkin abuse him up to the point where Mark falls through the ice over a pond at a Family Friends house. Eric and Nancy also underplay the event to the point where Mark represses it until a Ski Trip in high school
The story says multiple pets were missing, there were greasy bones on the counter, and in a bonfire, but only a dog collar was found in the fire. However, the author suggests that all types of pets were killed.
In chapter 19, a character has a sewing needle stuck into their eye (paragraph begins "She reached her hand out to swat him off"). Character removes it themself a couple of pages later. The eye is temporarily blinded but recovers vision in the next scene.
Mark and Louise are tortured by Pupkin throughout the book.

Louise drives past the scene of the car accident less than a week later and there’s still broken glass and the hub cap from their parents car at the intersection.
Chapter 34: you find out Mark and Louise’s Uncle Freddie drowned 65+ years before the main narrative. Their mother Nancy was felt to be partially at fault since her parents had her a seven year old watching her five year old brother by the kitty pool at the Howard Johnson’s Hotel
Chapter 20: Mark shoots a Pupkin to stop him from attacking Louise, Some of Pupkins stuffing falls out and he escapes into the vent
Chapter 27: The EMTs that respond to Louise’s 911 call are coming off a call where police officer shot off a finger while testing a gun at a Walmart and then shot the attendant in the shin trying to pick up the same gun.
