Kate Garrett, who is reeling from a personal tragedy and spends her days boarding and training horses at Echo Valley Farm, twenty-two secluded, picturesque acres in Southeastern Pennsylvania. Late one night, her wayward daughter, Claire, arrives at her doorstep, frightened, trembling, and covered in someone else’s blood. From that simple premise, Echo Valley becomes a heart-pounding thriller about just how far a mother will go to save her child.
The dog is threatened with abandonment by Kate's daughter, who in one scene tries to coerce Kate by saying she will steal her dog and leave him in the middle of nowhere to starve to death. She is prevented from acting on this threat, however.
SPOILER: The film's third act involves a scheme to set fire to a stable and kill the horses within for insurance money. The stable is burned to the ground and we are led to believe that the horses have died, but keep watching and it's eventually revealed that they were rescued from the blaze.
Horses are inside a stable that is deliberately set ablaze as part of an apparent scheme to collect insurance money.
SPOILER: the horses are ultimately revealed to have survived, but we see shots of them panicking that might still be distressing.
Her daughter tries to take the dog as leverage to get her mum to give her money for drugs, threatening to drive the dog so far into the woods it will starve and won’t be able to find it’s way home. Her mum holds the dog whilst her daughter punches her in the back. The dog is barking and distressed during this. She ultimately ends up leaving without the dog, but I really didn’t like this scene and found it quite upsetting. If you want to skip this once the mum locks herself in the room start forwarding.
Implied but not explicitly stated or shown beyond “I’m the one who broke up our family.” Main character was previously married to someone else and fell in love with an employee on their farm.
In a text message sent to Kate, Claire expresses her belief that she would be better off dead, but this does not manifest into any self-harm shown on screen.
