No animals were harmed. A veternarian was on staff and the credits state: “Animal scenes filmed in the United States were monitored by the American Humane Association” and “Animal scenes filmed in Canada were monitored by the British Columbia S.P.C.A.” and the filmmakers thank the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals as well as the NORCAL Golden Retriever Rescue.

Dogs fight but not for entertainment. The dogs are okay afterwards.

However there is a fake-out scene that makes you think Chance has been hit by a truck. It’s brief.
