The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl

Movie • 2005 • Adventure

Report
Everyone always knew that Max had a wild imagination, but no one believed that his wildest creations -- a boy raised by watchful great white sharks and a girl with the force of a volcano -- were real. Now, these two pint-sized action masters will show Max that even an ordinary kid has what it takes to be extraordinary.

I sort of understand why people said yes. There is a part where some bloodhound-type wire dogs run after the protagonists and off a cliff, but they're bad guys and not very sympathetic characters so I think most people who struggle with pet death won't have trouble with this one.

The parents in this movie verbally fight at the beginning, causing Max stress, but it never comes to blows. The mom wants the dad to shape up so he can help financially support the family, and the dad wants to continue to work as a writer. This is pretty inconsequential to most of the story.

There are early CG fish at about 1h06m that float up and out of the recently broken ice that are visibly dead. They're only on screen for a moment. There's also a piece of fish meat with a googly eye that gets scorched by Lavagirl.

There is a scene where two giants pick up a cookie Max, Sharkboy, and Lavagirl are standing on and tries to eat it. All of them get off of it in time and none of them are eaten.

A lot of scenes have Lavagirl shooting lava at things, but it operates on kids rules where lava makes you go "owch!" or "ow!" and then you're fine.

Teeth aren't damaged, but Sharkboy has shark-like teeth at several points in the movie that might look unusual or disturbing, but they're healthy for him to have because he's part shark.

Some dreamed wire dogs fall off a cliff and are never seen again and might be presumed dead. None of the human characters die in this way. There are several times where people fall from high places, but it's got kid rules where you fall a whole lot and go "owch! owwie!" and are fine. The one time the height is taken seriously, Linus is caught and saved.

Sharkboy's dad is implied to die by Minus because he's "at the bottom of the sea." It's revealed only a couple minutes later that his dad is alive.

Since this category includes things that are really really important to kids: yes. Max's dream journal is destroyed by Linus, who's bullying him, and he's devastated. It's then also incinerated by Lavagirl in a dream, and then zapped by Mr Electric, both times he's more okay with it because it was an accident.

None shown on screen. There are several mentions to vomit, such as Linus making things up while he's bullying Max saying his whole family "blew chunks" because of how much Max stinks. In the second scene where they're all in school the characters are all saying the name of their fun superhero OCs, such as "vomitboy and barfgirl" or something.

Several times characters spit things out because they don't like the flavor and there's CG indiscriminate orbs. In the scene where Mr Electric is complaining about sunlight he farts sparks and there's a fart sound effect. During Minus and Max's confrontation he says "brain fart" and his head swells up, and he flies around like a balloon with a fart sound effect.

Maybe? Lavagirl is really sad for most of the film about being made of lava, because she can't touch most things without destroying them. She even yells at Max about how upset she is. She eventually learns to live happily as she is. But I'd say that counts.

There's thunder and lightning in the beginning. Some of the early 2000s CG has very bright colors, especially in the first scene on Planet Drool with the roller coaster setting. It gets less bright from there.

The dad mixes up their names as "Sharkgirl and Lavaboy," it's not malicious and we don't see the characters react to it.

In another scene, Lavagirl hands out glasses. "Blue for the boys, pink for the girls" and hands Max a pink pair. He asks for a blue pair, but they don't have any more of them.

No black people die in this movie. Mr Electric, who is played by George Lopez, does die. However, Mr Electridad (the human, not-evil version of him) is fine.

Sharkboy gets zapped by electric eels and sinks to the bottom of some water. Lavagirl says he can't hold his breath forever, but she saves him. They both lie on the ground looking dead for a little bit, but end up okay.
