Corky the Dog puts in a great performance. He stands in for the audience in a lot of ways, and evokes empathy for Lon Chaney Jr.'s character. He has the penultimate scene in the film and it might bring a tear to your eye.

2 goldfish are kept in a small fishbowl and then Lon Chaney smashes his hand into the middle of the bowl. Probably not badly harmed, especially for goldfish and not that badly for the time, but it’s not very nice to goldfish.

No, however it is an implied threat as the main villain attempts to brainwash Anne Nagel through electric shock and says how “the female of the species” is much more susceptible to such treatments.
