ReportSynopsis
At its heart, Banished is a story of survival. Though it is set in the stark historical reality of the founding of the penal colony in Australia in 1788 after the arrival of the First Fleet, it is not the story of Australia and how it came to be. Rather, it is a tale of love, faith, justice and morality played out on an epic scale in a confined community where the stakes are literally life and death.

The colony has an unequal ratio of men to women, and the men overseeing the camp take advantage of that. Every episode involves women not being able to be with the men they want because of this abusive system. A woman is manhandled in episode 2 and threatened with rape, but the man doesn't go through with it (though her wrist is bruised). Assaults are regularly discussed and the lead up to them is depicted. You could also describe all the sex that happens between guards and female convicts as sexual assault if you consider the power imbalance. If this topic is something you don't want to see, you should avoid this series altogether.
