Imo, it was definitely *not* an example of how media often portrays violence against women as something to ogle at.

Neglect is a form of abuse, and the way the mother was going about it, I would consider this abuse. Especially the "drag us down with her" line. And especially with the father repeatedly reminding the mom that she had more than one child.
