Les Mineurs

Movie • 2003

Report
In Shanxi province (southwest of Beijing), farmers work, risking their lives, in coal mines to supplement the meager income the land brings them. These small mines, of which at one time there were nearly 6,000, are closing one after the other for safety reasons and because of the pollution they cause. The preparation and celebration of the ceremony of offerings to the mine gods will perhaps be the last in Zhong Village. This independent documentary, filmed in light video, reveals the discreet view taken by the director on women and men who are very close to him, since several are part of his family.
