In December 2004, close-knit family Maria, Henry and their three sons begin their winter vacation in Thailand. But the day after Christmas, the idyllic holiday turns into an incomprehensible nightmare when a terrifying roar rises from the depths of the sea, followed by a wall of black water that devours everything in its path. Though Maria and her family face their darkest hour, unexpected displays of kindness and courage ameliorate their terror.
This movie contains 42 potentially triggering events.
There are realistic injuries, including a huge wound on the back of the Mom's leg. It's frightening to the kid looking at it but it's brief and not lingered upon. So, judgment call but this does not seem like body horror to me, more like gore.
It's likely that a main character has a broken leg for most of the film.
During a hospital scene, Lucas sees a woman wheeled in with an absolutely mangled leg. Other hospital patients in the background are seen with splints and casts.
lucas and maria repeatedly put themselves in danger for each other during the storm (i.e.: letting go of trees they’re hanging onto to find each other) but they both make it out alive
Dead bodies are visible in the back of a pickup truck, in a hospital, and on the side of the road. It’s apparent that thousands have been killed and thousands of others are unaccounted for after the tsunami.
Just after 43 minutes: There’s one very triggering scene, when the mom and son are in the hospital and the mom tells the son to give the tangerine to the woman next to her, she starts gagging and then vomits blood and immediately after that, the mom starts gagging and retching and vomits up a bunch of blood and debris. The son also gags shortly after. I have emetophobia and that was the only scene that bothered me. I muted it and covered most of my eyes, but I could tell it was bad.
Nothing shown on screen, but it’s easily understood that the tsunami has decimated the country. Thousands of people have lost their homes, businesses, and all of their belongings.
A woman hospitalized next to a main character is catatonic after surviving the tsunami. She stares at the ceiling and does not respond to any attempts at conversation.
None of the characters depicted in this movie are expressly LGBT. Based on the astronomical death toll of the tsunami, LGBT+ people definitely died in real life.
The mother’s top is broken, exposing her breast, she ties it up to cover herself. Later in the hospital, a doctor cuts her top open to treat her injuries. There are also various nude background characters, both alive and dead.
We see an exposed breast which is probably what the “Yes” answers are referencing, but it is in no way sexualized and is actually a rather traumatic scene
A woman develops a life-threatening infection during the second act of the film. Her deteriorating health is apparent. She gets weaker, paler, and closer to death until antibiotics and multiple surgeries save her life.
Christmas is celebrated at the beginning of the film and Naomi Watts says something along the lines of "thank you for the scarf darling, I mean Santa Claus" to Ewan McGregor
One of the main characters in injured during the tsunami. Her leg is impaled, which is briefly shown on screen. She is bleeding when she gets out of the water.
One of the minor characters later vomits blood during a hospital scene
