Shadow's parental species left him on the ARK after donating his blood, as they lived on a comet that only passed the Earth every 50 years. Other than that, we know Gerald is present for Shadow on the ARK but his interactions with Shadow are not onscreen. Part of Shadow's nightmare shows Gerald as an intimidating/imposing figure, referencing his darker nature in "Sonic Adventure 2," before he disappears as Shadow desperately chases him.
