A father calls his daughter a b***h, throws her to the ground, and drags her home. Later, the mother tackles the same daughter and the daughter repeatedly stabs her with a gardening shovel in self defense.
Aside from the physical abuse, Thomasin mostly, but all of the children are mentally abused by their religious parents. They constantly have to repeat that they are worthless sinners and belong in hell. Grade A Parenting.
After milking a goat and finding only blood to come out, a character kicks the goat in the stomach. There is then a shot of more, darker blood on the floor of the barn
An adolescent boy is kissed on the mouth by (seemingly) an adult woman intentionally trying to lure him. He doesn't resist or say anything, but it's implied that the woman is a witch possessing him in the process.
A character is possessed and unable to open their mouth, so another character quickly pries out some teeth. Graphic but extremely brief and easy to miss. Look away after the mother mentions his mouth being sealed.
MAJOR SPOILERS: A baby, an adolescent boy, and 2 young twins all die. The only death actually shown onscreen is the adolescent boy, after he's possessed. Only the gory aftermath of the baby's death is shown, and the twin's death is heavily implied but never shown.
A father is killed near the end of the film. It is bloody but quick. A mother is killed after attacking her daughter. The daughter stabs her to save her own life. It is bloody but quick. The bodies are shown only once again from a distance.
Jump scares are very minor. I would go so far as to say they are more sudden view changes to upsetting images. There is one definite jump scare at the end involving the father and a goat.
no, but a character suggests to another that they should kill themselves to solve their problems, the suggestion is hyperbolic/not serious, and the suggestion is also not taken seriously
There is a nightmare sequence where a crow pecks upon a woman’s breast. It’s not up close and the character is laughing, not screaming in pain, but it is gorey. The scene may be dysmorphic/reminiscent of strong dysphoria for afab folks
There is a scene where 3 children are boarded into the goats' pen by their father, but they're not panicking because it is a small space. There is plenty of room for all the children to sit around alongside the animals, they're only upset that their father is keeping them holed up because he believes one or all of them are evil.
When the mother believes her daughter is a witch, she calls her a s**t and accuses her of trying to sleep with her brother and then seducing her father (neither of which are true).
Somewhat. Much of the story's deeper plot revolves around teenaged Thomasin coming of age in a repressive Puritan environment. Her younger brother examines her cleavage. There is brief and VERY nonsexual full-frontal female nudity. Naked young women and their b*****s and bottoms are shown.
(SPOILER) I believe it’s open to interpretation. In my opinion the amount of mental abuse and hatred Thomasin had to endure from her entire family, completely justifies her finding happiness in ‘Living Deiciously’ at the end. She also never truly harmed anyone, other than her mother who was LITERALLY trying to kill her for something she didn’t do.
The aftermath of a baby being ground up into a bloody mess is shown, but the act of it is not. A boy has bloody cuts on his body and mouth, and has his blood let into a bowl from a cut in his head. A woman bleeds from an unseen wound in her breast after having it pecked at by a crow. A man is skewered by a goat's horns twice and coughs up blood as well as having bloody wounds. Several goats are seen on the ground disemboweled.
