A dog is struck and scolded, but the scene is fairly silly and the dog doesn't seem upset.

The book takes place in a post-apocalyptic world (zombie apocalypse). At one point the character walks through houses where, years ago, the occupants killed themselves/families/pets. It is very brief and not graphic, but still sad.

There is also a dead crow that features throughout the book, but it's already dead when found--seemingly natural causes.

Dead crow that features heavily through the book. It is found dead, presumably of natural causes. Its body is described repeatedly--more affectionate than graphic or disturbing.
