No one is hanged. The film opens with the protagonist hanging a noose in a tree and putting it around his neck. We see a close-up of his feet on a bench and then of the rope going taught. He tells students at his new school that he was expelled for attempting suicide by hanging, but it is later revealed that he was "faking it to get attention", tying the rope long and hopping down off the bench without actually being in any danger.
