In my personal opinion, the camera sometimes lingers on Hope's, a 14 year old boy, backside in a way that I don't think you can shrug off as accidental, in cutscenes and can occur in gameplay, as he takes up a good portion of the screen.

Hope implies it happened to him, but this is shown to be wildly untrue.

A central plot point of the game has one of out heroes lose his mother. It sticks with him forever, and heavily drives his actions. We do see her die, and he reacts in incredibly traumatized ways.

The main character is an ex-cop and some of the Cavalry is portrayed as being good. However, PSICOM, the Sanctum's police service, is a major villainous faction that goes as far as to try to commit genocide, and the Guardian Corps, another police organization, while not portrayed as negatively, are still fought due to cooperating with PSICOM

The character is revealed to be alive, but we see what appears to be them shooting themselves in the head. This is a VERY intense scene, and for several hours of gameplay you believe they are dead for good.

Two women who are seemingly in love both die. Well not exactly die, but they are definitely not alive. They sacrifice themselves together. The characters are not ever explicitly stated to be lesbians, and in love, but varied interviews and writing have stated that they are.

There is a tone of racism towards people and other lifeforms originating from the underworld of Gran Pulse (referred to in Cocoon simply as Pulse) that anything from this place are dangerous to Cocoon and it's people when this is simply untrue, although there is a centuries long war currently in "ceasefire" although no known humans from Gran Pulse are known to be still alive at the time of the beginning of game. But anyone who is known to come into contact with anything from Pulse are branded as "tainted" and made to be "relocated to Pulse" a.k.a genocided.

XIII-2 is the transitional game that causes the events of the third game to set in motion, so it's a given to not end on good note. The other two have happy endings.

Cocoon forces use primarily submachine guns. Multiple civilians are murdered (out of shot) by them. Lightning's primary weapon is a sword that can transform into a gun, but is rarely used this way. Sazh's main weapons are pistols akimbo.
