Unlock the secrets of the Dragon Eye and come face to face with more dragons than anyone has ever imagined as Hiccup, Toothless and the Dragon Riders soar to the edge of adventure.
Not really, but women are held in dangerous situations (knife to throat kinda thing) to put pressure on others. At one point Astrid is purposely targeted because the enemy knows Hiccup cares about her.
one character has a nightmare, around which an episode centres, that he ends up homeless/abandoned/an otherwise unloved failure. while it is vivid, he works against the possibility and is ultimately fine.
Not really. The only "real" instance is that a character believes that a family member killed another family member. This is later revealed to not be true.
Aside from that is more friendly rough housing than anything: The twins smack each other all the time, but they're usually fairly mutually complacent about it. It's very sibling like and not meant as actual aggression.
There's friendly punches to arms given between some of the dragon riders.
Astrid does throw Snotlout or otherwise be a little rough with him sometimes, but it's more played as a joke/their dynamic and not meant to be taken too seriously.
Sin of the Past episode: There is a tavern scene when Heather goes looking for a lead on her father. Several times throughout the episode a person stumbles out of the tavern, one even collapses on the floor as soon as they make it out the door.
YES! It's not shown on screen, but an episode focuses on Stoick struggling with loosing his dragon. It's not said how the dragon passes, but since he doesn't mention anything I assumed it was from old age.
There are also several close calls throughout the show, including scenes where the riders genuinely think their dragon is dying.
No dogs but some episodes with dragons forced to fight each other. in S3E8 there is a dragon fighting ring with very similar themes where dragons are forced to fight each other for entertainment
No cat deaths. No cats shown on screen. There are sometimes when an object is thrown and a cat yowls in the distance, but I think that's more of a funny sound joke to make than actually implying a cat got hit by anything.
Dead fish appear regularly as it's the main food source for the dragons and a pretty steady one for the people as well. They're cartoony, but still dead.
There's also a yak thing? in the Nut house. I honestly have no idea if it's a yak decoration (so never alive) or a taxidermied yak (might count as a dead animal?) It appears a couple of times. There's one scene where it's eye moves (S5E11).
People eat meat that looks like large drumsticks and some steak looking items. You never see the whole animal of these.
No. However in one episode someone (with a romantic past, so not a stranger) comes to marry one of the girls by saying "I will lift her from her feet, put her over my shoulder, and return with her to my island, where she will live out her days as my trustworthy wife." When the others ask if she knows about this, he says "is that important", to which one of the other girls tries to attack him for being insensitive.
It's more played as cultural differences between this person and the Berkians, but it is a bit insensitive/objectifying. However, this person has been their ally and has had mutual romance with the girl he came for, so I think it's more up to the viewer how they take this. The person does seem to have respect for the girl he wants to marry and towards the end of the episode does something that shows he cares about how she feels and what she wants, not just what he wants.
In one episode where Hiccup explores the deep grounds of the ocean in order to free a dragon. He prepared himself rather well for it but there are some distresses caused.
Some dragons are thrown in the ocean while trapped in a cage, but they always get saved.
Very mild scratches. Some dragon blood shown only on scratches, which is purple/pink/blue, not human colored. Death scenes of enemies are perfectly cut so no gore is ever shown. There are several characters with noticeable scars on their face, but fresh injuries are not shown.
There's a couple drawings that are flashed quickly that show amputation or decapitation, but it's fairly cartoony and all black/white. Mostly in drawings from the twins of them joking around. They go by quick and are not very graphic.
Hiccup's prosthetic also comes off several times. Usually played for humor. Not really an amputation since his leg is already amputated, but there are some scenes that show the leg (covered with pants, no visible stump) without the "replacement" there. Also one episode where he has to make due with a skeleton's bones as a temporary prosthetic. (When he is in the sand trap)
There's a couple scenes where dragon breath is fired directly at the screen, and one where a dart is. It's a little bit jump scare like, but not as bad a quiet scenes that suddenly have something pop up.
Weapons clanking, some mild sound affects for injuries. It's not strong on the audio gore at all, but there are a couple of moments throughout the series. There are also hurt dragon cries/yelps.
There are however systematic attacks on people's home islands, which include destroying housing, active fires, and catapults. So war-like (but still PG friendly) attacks on towns, but no 9/11 depictions.
There are darts! I would consider this in the needle realm. Darts are shown sticking out when Hiccup is caught on a ship (S4E3). After he escapes and when an ally is standing in front of him, the ally is hit from the back with a dart. Ally falls, showing a dart in the back of the neck, and then another dart is fired straight at the camera (implying it hit Hiccup).
I think darts may be used a couple more times, but that's the time that stood out the most to me, especially as it's kinda a jumpscare/unexpected moment.
Tuffnut is hit with a dart when Gobber is messing with the dragon eye lens. This is around when they first get the lens.
Astrid does a risky move involving getting venom to help her dragon. She purposely rushes in and gets poisoned in order grab the venom. Hard to really say if it was an attempt or if she wasn't thinking her actions through because she thinks her dragon is dying and immediately needs the venom, or if she knows/trusts her friends to be able to cure her since she says something like hope you can make enough for two after she gets the venom.
Someone purposely gets infected with venom to try to save their dragon. I wouldn't necessarily call it self harm, more a sacrifice, but they do knowingly hurt themself getting the venom they need to make an antidote. (All is okay in the end)
yes, there are some episodes focused on a dragon that only appears in storms and channels thunder to attack (skrill), which have many scenes with thunder-type lighting.
There is the common "villains have hooked noses" trope, which can be considered antisemitic – also seen in Johann, the deceptive and manipulative trader. Other than that, probably no.
Ruffnut and Tuffnut, who are fraternal twins, are constantly mistaken for one another and therefore misgendered. It is also a running joke that people think both of them are male or both of them are female. So yes, there is some "haha, I thought he was a girl", but I guess that's not the same as misgendering a trans person, which doesn't happen (as far as we know, there are no trans characters).
A couple very mild kisses. One episode focuses around a wedding, with some lovey dovey talk from the engaged couple (all child appropriate nicknames and stuff, through kinda cringe imo).
There are some episodes where a main character falls into the ocean and is drowning // a dragon trapped in a cage falls into the ocean // there's one special scene where Hiccup purposefully goes to the ground of the ocean by a construction and it may become a bit distressing for some people. However, none of them ever drowns.
-- SPOILER: One of the villains (Ryker) drowns in one of the later episodes where he's fighting his brother Viggo and in the and gets "eaten"/pulled by a water dragon into the water. And probably dies. Also there's an episode where Ruffnut and Tuffnut end up in a special operation of the hunters. As Ruffnut gets caught, she is tied to a "tree" in an arena that gets flooded with water. However, she gets saved by Fishlegs.
