A television in chapter one contains footage of a character shooting himself to demonstrate a scientific theory. Viewing it is not required to progress.
Alan finds himself being stalked on several occasions by a variety of random characters such as Ben Mott, Emil Hartman, Barbara Jagger, and even "himself" through a series of televised messages originating from "The Bottom of The Lake".
A doctor attempts to convince the protagonist that the supernatural occurrences around them are not real and instead are the product of a schizophrenic episode. Under a literal interpretation of the game's plot, it is revealed that the doctor is lying to the protagonist to manipulate him into staying at his clinic.
Alan is prone to both Insomnia and alcohol fueled behavior issues which set a turbulence to his marriage with Alice. These behaviors are indicated in the Alan Wake DLC "The Signal". Alan also becomes heavily drunk with his agent Barry on Moonshine during the game.
The Darkness, while being mostly manifested as a form of possession, projects through the ghost of Barbara Jagger. Another ghostly entity, operating against "The Dark", is a former poet gone by the name of Thomas Zane who manifests as a ball of light during the Tutorial Chapter, and later on in the shape of a humanoid heavy diving suit during the late game.
Several minor jumpscares occur throughout combat and exploration. Only one major jumpscare happens in the pre-rendered cutscenes where the ghost of Barbara Jagger spontaneously teleports close to the frame and stares directly towards the player.
A character makes a retching noise indicating they're vomiting after drinking a large quantity of moonshine the previous night. No vomit is visually depicted.
A sheriff uses a fire department's helicopter without external permission during the events of the game. They unlock and enter multiple private properties without explicit permission given, though it's ambiguous if she had been given prior permission by the property holders.
Alice Wake (Wife of Alan Wake) suffers from progressive Nyctophobia and experiences minor anxiety attacks during the "Flashback" sequences of New York, as well as a major anxiety attack during the opening chapter of the game.
During a fictional TV Show "Night Springs"; an episode features a mad scientist giving a lecture about his device which affects quantum realities to prevent his death. To prove this; he points a weapon against his head. The machine is disconnected from a power source and the scientist, unknowing to this, proceeds to execute himself in front of the crowd.
Throughout the game; several police cruisers have their strobe lights active. There are also sequences of power fluctuations within the cities power grid leading to another array of strobe light effects.
Within the context of the story the characters are aware that they are part of a piece of literature the protagonist has written, but they never make reference to being in a video game.
Alan's wife Alice is freed from the Darkness after Alan sacrifices himself to finish writing the story. The fate of Alice is not mentioned in any epilogue besides a notion of her being a widow two years later during the events of "American Nightmare" while promoting her new movie "Sunrise".
During one of the very first chapters; Alan Wake fails to control his car and steers off the road into a canyon below. The player may also crash their car intentionally during segments allowing them to take direct control of a vehicle.
Several Police Helicopters are taken down by more physical manifestations of "The Darkness". The protagonist does ride one of the aforementioned helicopters but is not present during the crash.
In addition, the player can run over the darkness-possessed enemies with cars. This is encouraged by the gameplay mechanics, as doing so requires no ammunition, unlike most other methods of killing enemies.
Ben Mott, referred to as "The Kidnapper", dies by being torn apart inside a tornado manifested from the Dark Presence. There are also a large number of blood marks all throughout the game where people have been injured and/or killed.
Alan uses both a Pistol, Shotgun, and a Hunting Rifle to dispatch enemies possessed by the Darkness. The Police also open fire upon Alan during one of the mid-to-late game sequences.
