The show does have some "close up" sounds, but I don't recall anything really nasty. Otherwise, some characters react strongly to some music and a sound no one else can hear. Also, some throat clearing, glass breaking, etc.
No dementia specifically. However, a character suffers traumatic brain damage, which impacts their speech, memory, and consciousness. Another character explains how their mother mentally deteriorated in the final stages of a fatal cancer.
Most of the human race is wiped out in the first episode, so lots of children implied dead. There are a couple memorable/specific offscreen child deaths early in the series. A baby’s neck is snapped in the first episode. In the second episode, the show introduces a little girl who is in a ship that is later destroyed.
Honestly, a lot of the first episode of the miniseries feels reminiscent of the attacks on 9/11. Unsure if that was intentional or not; could possibly be triggering
