It's a very grey area. A running gag is that Dave, who is in his mid-twenties, once went out with a girl called Beverley Macca. In the very first episode, it's mentioned that Dave has a gig at Beverley Macca's eighteenth birthday party, meaning that Dave must have gone out with her before she'd turned 18.
Early in the series it's only stated that Dave fancies her and got a kiss from her at a gig after she'd turned 18, but later in the series this turns into him having gone out with her once, but apparently not having had sex with her.

That I remember there are some instances of homophobic slurs used. They appear to be offhand comments in normal conversation, not viewed as negative by the other characters. This may not have been as shocking at the time when the show came out but I found it upsetting.

There are mentions and jokes about sex in varying detail throughout the series. The end of The New Sofa shows Jim and Barbara starting to 'get cozy' together but it is cut short by Jim needing to use the bathroom.

The men of the family often speak like this about women. One running gag is that Beverly Macca is said to be very attractive and has large breasts.
In Series 3 Episode 7, Emma's parents visit the Royles - Valerie has breast implants. There is a drawn-out, awkward scene where the family stare at and compliment Valerie's implants while Valerie looks uncomfortable.

Not onscreen, but in Series 3 Episode 3, Jim mentions in an annoyed way that Dave cries over photos of baby David when he's drunk, saying that he's like an old woman with the baby.
