Holy cow was this shocking! Right in the midst of exciting action and the start of chapter 10 Searchlight dies suddenly and in a wildly unexpected way. There are only a few more pages in the book so readers and the characters don't really get any time to process what happened.

Terrible ending. The dog you fall in love with dies prior to crossing the finish line. His heart explodes from the effort of the race. They are racing to win money to save the family farm. The dog dies, the farm is lost. Truly a terrible book for children or really anyone.
