When megalomaniacal White Goodman, the owner of a trendy, high-end fitness center, makes a move to take over the struggling local gym run by happy-go-lucky Pete La Fleur, there's only one way for La Fleur to fight back: dodgeball. Aided by a dodgeball guru and Goodman's attorney, La Fleur and his rag-tag team of underdogs launch a knock-down, drag-out battle in which the winner takes all.
This movie contains 21 potentially triggering events.
No but there’s a scene where a Girl Scout is found out to be taking steroids and a “low-grade beaver tranquilizer” and this leads to her looking more traditionally masculine. She is notably taller than her troop members, has exaggerated arm hair, and has a very deep voice when she starts to cry. This is a very short bit so it’s not really explained, so you could interpret it as the Girl Scout taking performance-enhancing drugs to win the dodgeball tournament, or that she could be potentially dysphoric and trying to look/feel more masculine. The former seems more likely just based on the context but I don’t know for sure.
No, but Gordon’s children are left sitting alone by his wife while she flirts with other men. She’s not far away and the kids are in Gordon’s sight but they are kind of ditched.
Kate is pursued by multiple men, mostly in creepy and harassing ways, but no one is stalked. Although White does show up at her house unannounced and she’s clearly uncomfortable and asks how he knew her address.
A fat girl falls onto Justin during cheer tryouts and he’s shown gasping for air when she’s finally helped off of him. His head was also sort of positioned so it was in her crotch/butt area so the gasping for air thing could have kind of an icky and mean connotation.
Spoiler: someone is crushed to death by a heavy sign falling from the ceiling. The crushing itself is not shown but the characters feet are shown sticking out from under the sign after it falls similarly to in the Wizard of Oz. This isn’t graphic or too upsetting and is supposed to be played for laughs to an extent. Also, in a flashback to cheerleading tryouts, Justin is paired with a fat girl who he cannot lift properly and she falls on top of him. He survives but he is shown struggling beneath her and trying to push her off.
A woman throws a dodgeball at a random man in a bar and he is hit by it and collapses onto the floor. He’s shown several times and a character mentions that he thinks the man is dead but he most likely isn’t. The woman throws the ball to prove how strong and intimidating she is.
Not really, but the Average Joes are trained to dodge balls by having wrenches thrown at them because “if you can dodge a wrench you can dodge a ball”. Pretty much all of them are hit with the wrenches and are shown in pain afterword but they have to keep participating in their training.
Steve the Pirate is hit in the face with a wrench and is shown with an eye patch/bandage over his eye in the next scene. It’s clear that it is not part of his costume but is from the injury caused by the wrench. This isn’t dwelled upon and it’s not even mentioned.
Justin is in high school and when the Average Joes hold a car wash, their only customer is a man who pays Justin to wash his truck wheels in a Speedo-type swimsuit while the man watches. Justin is in a pretty compromising position and the man has a bully breed dog that growls and barks at Justin so he’s afraid to stop washing the truck. The man also is sticking his finger in his bellybutton while watching Justin scrub his tires and says something like “get in there nice and deep, boy.” Pretty gross
A women v*mits in her mouth, nothing is shown but she makes a body movement and noise, and also she also makes a little gulp noise when she swollows it.
I have severe emetophobia and it was ok for me to watch.
The only cops in this movie are shown for probably less than a minute and are beaten handily in a dodgeball tournament. Multiple cops get hit in the face with dodgeballs in a funny way so it’s kinda the opposite
No but after Kate kisses a woman, she’s assumed to be a lesbian but she corrects this assumption by saying she’s bi and then kissing a man directly after. This reinforces the stereotype that bisexual people are automatically non-monogamous.
there are a few flashing signs in the scenes that take place in Las Vegas; i don’t know if they’re enough to warrant a warning but they’re your average casino flashy lights
the d-slur is used as a joke as well as “queer” (said in a derogatory fashion) and a few other derogatory terms. a character is also called the f-slur (albeit in a much more emotionally charged scene where this is acknowledged as wrong.)
There’s lots of pretty offensive stereotypes throughout the movie. There are multiple comments made that Kate is a lesbian because she’s athletic and plays softball. It is revealed that she is actually bisexual and this is shown by her kissing a former female partner and then kissing a man, which perpetuates the stereotype/myth that bisexual people are all non-monogamous.
There are fat jokes, homophobic slurs and other derogatory terms, derogatory terms toward a Japanese dodgeball team, and a few drawings that appear similar to racist caricatures. In addition there’s a joke about a girl scout on steroids that is similar to many transphobic jokes and can be very uncomfortable for some.
Not intentionally. In the beginning Crash the dog is sniffing around/putting his head in Peter’s crotch when Peter is half-asleep and he makes comments about how it “feels good”, etc but then he wakes up and realizes it’s not a sexual partner and scolds the dog. This scene always makes me uncomfortable but it’s pretty brief. Also, towards the end one of the sports commentators mentions that he’s seen everything, including “a grown man satisfying a camel” but this is only mentioned this one time and not shown or anything.
Kate is the target of consistent sexual harassment and there are several scenes where the camera angles focus on parts of her body such as her legs and hips/chest. There are also dancers at the dodgeball tournament who are very scantily clad and are solely there for the “encouragement”/enjoyment of the men watching. Their dancing is quite provocative as well.
