Ellen Page's character shoots a wild pig from a tree and then has to shoot him again because he's still alive. When she's removing the entrails, the pig she's pulling them from is clearly real. She's crying and very upset as she's doing it. I've since confirmed through several articles/interviews that the animal was real and Page had been taught how to slaughter a pig to prepare for the scene. I've not been able to determine if the pig was actually killed in the film (doubtful), or off-camera, but I bailed at that point and won't go back. I find it abhorrent that everyone involved with this film placed so little value on an animal's life that they thought it perfectly acceptable to kill one for the movie. Lars von Trier did the same with a donkey for his film Manderlay, and John C. Reilly walked off the set and had to be replaced. Good for him.
