A character that is discussed a lot and was close with one of the main characters is central to the plot and dies, but we never see that character alive.
There's a call that happens in a dream that's kind of unsettling. It's also unclear what's happening for a while, which drives the characters to paranoia.
It’s firmly implied that a previous firewatch lookout named Ned may been an abusive parent to his son. It’s left uncertain wether he killed his son or it was an accident.
It is discovered that a former Firewatch Ned Goodwin was the figure that Henry encountered in the canyon on the first day. He was the one responsible for breaking into Henry’s Tower, listening to the radio communications between him and Delilah, destroying the teen’s campsite, cutting the radio line, attacking Henry by Jonesy lake, trapping Henry in the cave, starting the fire at the research site and following Henry.
There is no domestic violence but in the games beginning there is option for Henry to argue with or ignore Julia because she returns from a late night out without a phone call which worries him, after discovering she is sick the player can choose for Henry to care for Julia rather than move her to a care-home, then there will be an option for Henry to choose to use a chair to barricade a bedroom door so Julia doesn’t wonder off when he goes out.
Gaslighting is a pretty major plot point — the antagonist of the story uses it in hopes to drive the main character to leave his post. There is also a section where said main character wonders if he is crazy, etc, which is pretty typical for gaslit people.
It's not explicitly shown, but it's open to interpretation whether the kid that dies in the story was killed by his dad or not. There's also a point where the main character Henry mentions in passing that his dad used to beat him.
There are no drugs in the game, however Delilah does mention that her sister and aunt both smoke Pot. When Henry discovers the teenager’s destroyed campsite Delilah will mention the possibility that they had a “bad mushroom trip”, after Henry is attacked by Jonesy lake Delilah will ask if he found any mushrooms.
Both the teenage girls Henry encounters are considerably drunk from drinking cans of beer that he discovers littered around their campsite. Delilah confesses that she was drunk when Henry arrived on the first night at his tower. She can also get drunk after the research site is set on fire.
At the start of the game when Henry chooses between adopting two dogs, if he chooses to adopt the beagle, it will get kicked by a mugger who attempts to rob Henry and Julia. There is the option to adopt a turtle and how the player chooses to treat it could result in abuse.
The body of an elk with a tracking collar can be discovered near the end of the game (whether it was killed by a Grizzly Bear or by Ned Goodwin is unknown)
I'm putting here as a warning, as I think for some players it could be potentially triggering like an unsolicited nude, but there is a drawing of a naked body that is shown to the player. Just thought I'd mention, as could be triggering
No, but on day 2 one of the discussions is about the backstory of a character named Brian, there can be misunderstanding between the characters with the player able to ask if he was a boyfriend of the other character, she makes a joke about having a sexual relationship with him even though he is a minor but it’s just a joke.
physically no, emotionally maybe. On day 64 depending on the dialogue options It is strongly implied that Henry and Delilah have a very intimate conversation via Radio (while Henry is separated but still technically married to his wife). It can be learned that Delilah lied about her ex-boyfriend to her sister and said that he cheated on her with a neighbour.
There aren’t any traditional jumpscares, however there are moments in the game that may startle the player (if the player chooses to explore a burned down cottage a raccoon may jump out from an old stove, when Henry discovers the clipboard and radio he is quickly and violently knocked unconscious by an unseen attacker, Henry will hear a terrifying sound that Delilah says is most likely either an elk or someone trying to locate him.
There are no clowns, however there is a rather creepy wooden Cutout figure of an in-universe fictional character called ‘Forest Byrnes’ that can be found next to the outhouse.
There is point in the game where Henry can become paranoid, after discovering he and Delilah are being spied on and he panics, afraid that he has made everything up including Delilah and that he is starting to get dementia like Julia.
Delilah will freak out when Henry discovers the cassette taped to his door making it look like they are responsible for the fire at the research site. Near the end of the game when Delilah tells henry she is being evacuated he can become anxious about being left behind.
At one point, Henry gets trapped in a cave. He makes it out, though, and I don't think the game specifically tried to make players feel claustrophobic with the way they portrayed this event.
Early in the game Henry hears thunder while walking through the canyon to return to his lookout tower and he and Delilah can discuss Roy Sullivan, a park ranger who got struck by lighting seven times and committed suicide.
Early on in the game Henry can accidentally turn on a flash light aimed towards himself which he finds inside a cache box next to the cave, shortly after Henry encounters a figure in the canyon who shines a torch down at him before running away, there is a another point later in the game when Henry discovers an abandoned backpack and he accidentally takes a photo of himself with a camera from the backpack which causes a quick flash.
Early in the game the main character can receive some verbal abuse from a pair of drunken teenagers in the lake he is tasked with confronting over their illegal use of fireworks depending of the dialogue options.
At the beginning, there is a drawing of Henry fully nude in a notebook. A sexual conversation is implied, though not explicitly described, over the radio between Delilah and Henry.
Technically yes, part of the main storyline is discovering that a former Firewatch lookout never returned to civilisation after a personal tragedy and they have been living out in the wilderness for several years.
