In Diviners, there is a scene in which Tommy Duffy is dared to enter an old butchery warehouse. They mention a ferocious guard dog that has long teeth and eats kids. Inside, there is trouble, and Tommy falls to the ground and backs up in a crawl, but comes into blood on the floor, still dripping. Looking up, he sees the previously mentioned German Shepherd hanging from butchers hooks, innards spilling from its belly.
There are multiple gorey murders throughout the book. They become less described as time goes on and the main character does not personally witness the murder scene.
To keep supernatural truths under wraps, Detective Malloy fabricates a story that the murderer was an unknown person, shot by an officer. The officer is featured in papers and gets a promotion.
Multiple characters suffer from PTSD. Evie, vicariously and through the loss of her older brother. Theta, from previous domestic violence. Sam, from the loss of his mother. Memphis, from the loss of his mother and his healing abilities. Jericho, from his childhood illness and experimentation. Almost every character exhibits signs of PTSD.
The eyes are cut out from the body of the first murder victim. Continuing in the book, there is mentioned of hollowed eye sockets and missing eyes of the dead.
Trigger warning, DV/SA: there is a chapter from Theta's perspective, reviewing her history. In the chapter she recounts her previous marriage with her abusive ex husband, Roy. Roy is physically, verbally, emotionally, and sexually abusive towards Theta.
One of the murders in the book involves a man being burned alive in an office of his masonic lodge. The scene unfolds described from his point of view, then later the body is described at the crime scene.
